Four Tet - There is Love in You"There is Love in You" by Four Tet It is hard to say how I got into Four Tet. I used to have this thing where I would go into a local record store and grab a random CD that appealed to me. Low and behold, combined with a record label that I knew had a history of artists that matched my tasted, I acquired my first Four Tet LP—“Everything Ecstatic”, in 2005. To be honest, it was a little above my 22 year-old brain. Yet it intrigued me. Hebden has a way of doing that. It is as if one ha... Read more |
Vampire Weekend - Contra![]() "Contra" by Vampire Weekend If you haven’t heard of the band Vampire Weekend yet you must be living in a hole. Don’t let the ultra-hipsters confuse you—just because the band is getting to be popular in the mainstream radio industry doesn’t mean that they suck. Being a popular band doesn’t automatically make you suck. Being really cool doesn’t automatically make you uncool. Some people have this way of disliking a band after a bit because they start getting well known. If this is a personality trait that you share, stop it because you’re missing out by not tilting an ear towards th... Read more |
Fever Ray by Fever Ray![]() Fever Ray by Fever Ray A couple weeks ago I got this new CD at KBeach by Fever Ray and to be honest, I looked at it and put it to the side because I didn?t know who the artist was nor did I seem entranced by its cover in a way that made me want to play it. Finally, a few days ago I did---and I read the info on the cover, which helped me figure out that I totally messed up by not listening to it right away.Fever Ray is comprised of 1/2 of Th... "Veckatimest" by Grizzly Bear Grizzly Bear has been a perfect band since day one--or rather since the first day their record crossed my fingers in 2006. Yellow House (Warp Records) was one of those gems in a sea of rocks. Compared to Animal Collective and Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear's music was refreshingly unique in a folky, lo-fi, indie rock sort of way. What wasn't to like? So you can understand my feeling of excitement when I learned that the band was releasing a new full length album, Veckatimest. Mixed...

"Around the Well" by Iron and Wine To this point in his career, Sam Beam has made progressively fuller, more musically complex, and, in this writer's opinion, better albums each time out. 2007's The Shepherd's Dog was a complete realization of the full-band sound he'd been building up to in his live shows, his collaboration with Calexico, and to a lesser degree on his recordings; as such, it felt like a milestone. So it seems like a good time to pause and look back at the old county...

"Hombre Lobo" by Eels The central metaphor of 2005's "Railroad Man" worked harder than a steam engine to convey the idea that Mark Everett (aka E, for all intents and purposes, Eels) just wasn't made for these times. I call bullshit: Considering Everett's prolific nature, restless manner with aliases, and disdain of the music industry, you'd figure the internet age would result in an outpouring of more Eels material than ever before. So how is the 40-minutes-and-change Hombre Lobo, Eels' first collection of new songs in four years? Could...
